About

John Borg's Guardians of the Galaxy is one of Stern's most playful Marvel machines. The game is built around the first film and combines Christopher Franchi's hand-drawn artwork with a genuinely entertaining set of physical toys: Groot, Rocket and the Orb all have meaningful jobs in the rules rather than simply decorating the playfield.

The Orb and Groot are particularly important because the game uses them to control multiball progression. That makes Guardians a machine where understanding the toys is more useful than simply looking for the biggest score insert.

It is a very good UK pub-or-arcade machine because you can have fun without knowing the rules, but there is plenty to discover once you do. Groot isn't just there to say something funny; use him.

A mode's points are the least valuable thing it gives you

Completing a mode pays three times over: an untimed super mode for the rest of the ball, ten per cent of the mode total into every end-of-ball bonus for the rest of the game, and a 5x jackpot shot in Groot Multiball. Timing out costs you all three and none of the progress.
