About

Iron Maiden is a machine that looks like pure heavy metal chaos but has a much more controlled game underneath. John Borg designed it, and the machine uses Maiden's music and Eddie as its central character. The artwork and presentation lean heavily into the band's visual identity rather than trying to reproduce a particular album.

The game is built around Maiden songs and modes, with the major shots repeatedly feeding into a ruleset that becomes more rewarding once you understand how the modes stack.

It is one of the more approachable Stern music machines because you can immediately understand what the game wants you to do. Pick a song, learn its shots, and stop treating the left orbit like it owes you money.

Four cards and the Beast

Iron Maiden throws an enormous amount at you. Almost all of it is feeding four collectable cards, and the multiplier most players never switch on.

  1. The captive ball

Top centre, with the machine own instruction printed beside it: shoot the captive ball to collect M-U-M-M-Y letters. The letters themselves are the inserts running down from it.

  2. Number of the Beast

The circle in the middle of the playfield, ringed by the six mode inserts that feed it.

  3. The songs

A ladder of songs above the flippers, each with an Eddie beside it: 2 Minutes To Midnight, Aces High, Fear Of The Dark, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Flight Of Icarus.
