About

The Uncanny X-Men brings Marvel’s mutant heroes and villains to pinball in a game built around assembling the X-Men and taking on the Brotherhood of Mutants. The playfield uses characters and locations from the comic universe rather than relying solely on the films, giving it a distinctly comic-book identity.

The game is structured around choosing characters, completing missions and building towards larger battles. Different X-Men contribute different abilities, making the choice of who to work with part of the strategy rather than simply a visual feature.

There is a lot happening on the playfield, but the character system gives it a useful structure. Choose your team deliberately; the X-Men you build can make a difference to how you approach the game.

Do the Danger Room first

The Uncanny X-Men will happily let you start a mission the moment one lights. Spend a little time in the Danger Room beforehand and the same mission is worth double, and the future you travel to afterwards gets easier as well.

What you’re looking at · 4
  1. The Sentinel head

The magenta head looming over the top of the playfield, and the machine's centrepiece. Hits on it are what put the giant Sentinel in front of you, and beating that one is what starts the multiball the rest of the game is pointed at.

  2. The mission grid

The panel with the red X through it, ringed by the eight missions. The four in the corners are the gentler set. Xavier's line printed underneath tells you what it is for: this is where your team's progress is kept.

  3. The X-Jet

The jet on the left with its name printed beside it. Off the plunge it feeds the ramp above it for a skill shot, and later it is the first half of the two-shot super jackpot in Berzerker multiball.

  4. Downtown

The signed lane in the upper left. Hit it again and again from the plunge and it builds a five-way time loop, which is the most interesting of the four skill shots on offer here.
