About

Keith Elwin's Jurassic Park is one of Stern's modern classics and one of the machines that makes a UK pinball trip worthwhile if you find one in good condition. It takes the 1993 film and turns it into a rescue mission around Isla Nublar, with four ramps, three flippers, the Jungle Explorer vehicle and the enormous T-Rex dominating the playfield. The Premium and LE go considerably further with the motorised T-Rex and interactive Raptor Pen. The artwork is by Johnny Bergeron, better known as Johnny Crap.

This is a game about controlling the chaos. You are constantly trying to work through the park map, qualify modes and build towards the bigger multiballs, while the layout gives you plenty of opportunities to lose a ball while attempting something ambitious.

It is also one of those machines where the Pro can be the better choice for some players. The Premium's T-Rex is spectacular, but the underlying game is already excellent without it. Before you start firing at everything that moves, work out where you are on the park map.

Do not rescue everybody

Jurassic Park asks you to save the park staff and catch the dinosaur, and it is entirely possible to do the first so well that the second becomes impossible. The staff are bait as much as they are points.

What you’re looking at · 4
  1. The T. rex

The head craning over the top left corner of the playfield, and the thing the whole machine is built around getting the attention of.

  2. The tour vehicle

The stalled Explorer in the upper middle. Hit it three times and you start a T. rex hurry-up, which is the way into the multiball.

  3. The raptor pen

The caged structure down the left. Trap balls in it and keep hitting it to start Raptor Tri-Ball; on a Pro it cannot hold them, but it is the same shot in the same place.

  4. The map

The island painted across the lower half, and a scoreboard rather than decoration. Spell MAP on the lit arrows and the left ramp takes you into a paddock.
