About

Pokémon is Stern’s pinball machine built around the world of Pokémon, and it turns catching Pokémon into the game’s central objective. The playfield is packed with familiar characters and locations, while the rules are built around exploring, catching and battling rather than simply chasing a collection of unrelated modes.

The game has a strong sense of progression, with different Pokémon presenting different challenges and rewards. It is approachable enough for someone who knows the franchise but has never played serious pinball, while the deeper rules give experienced players plenty to work through.

The important thing is not to treat every Pokémon as an isolated target. Work out what you’re trying to catch and build towards it rather than simply shooting whatever is flashing.

Story modes are not for points

Pokémon buries a small scoring engine under a lot of systems. The modes you play early are worth far less than the permanent multipliers they hand you, and knowing that changes the order you do everything in.
